After the turn of the century, Van Winkle purchased Weller & Sons Co., together with the Stitzel Distillery (the distillery that produced most of the bourbons sold by the wholesaler), and merged the two companies together.While Prohibition forced most distilleries to close their doors soon thereafter, Van Winkle was granted a license to continue operating his distillery and producing whiskey for medicinal purposes. By the time of his death in 1966 (at the age of 91), Van Winkle was the oldest active distiller in the country.
This Van Winkle Bourbon cuts as close to barrel proof as possible. Just a splash of Kentucky limestone well-water and this Whiskey is ready for bottling. This whiskey is as smooth with rich copper hues, and a compellingly sweet palate. It’s a big, bold, aged bourbon that has great balance for its high proof and flavor.

I’m not one to refrigerate my bourbon, preferring a room temperature shot from time to time. The first notes of Noah’s were wonderful. There was a soft heat and the fruity notes were lovely. As time went on and we got closer to the bottom of the bottle, it heated. Harshly. We are not aficionados and perhaps didn’t treat this whiskey quite right, but that last shot was really tough. I might take to refrigerating in the future …
